The Abbey Information

The Abbey is the Waikato’s only Belgian Beer Café and one of more than 50 internationally that faithfully reproduce the craft and culture surrounding Belgian beer. The story of Belgian beer dates back to the Middle Ages when monasteries and abbeys controlled the supply of beer to the population. With the obvious hygiene and nutrition issues of the time, beer brewed by monasteries and abbeys was not only safer to drink than water but it was highly nutritious and was often described as “liquid bread”. The Abbey name is a tribute to the monks who pioneered many of Belgium’s extensive range of beers in ancient abbeys and monasteries.

Our authentic beer taps and bar layout allows us to pour our range of prestigious Belgian draught beers following the traditional nine step “theatre of the pour” technique which produces the best taste possible from every glass. Our fridges are stocked with over 30 varieties of popular Belgian beers each waiting to tell their story and further widen the drinking horizons of Hamilton’s accomplished beer connoisseurs. In proper European fashion, patrons can ensconce themselves on street front furniture and enjoy their beer in the afternoon sunshine while watching the world go by. With a basalt exterior, hardwood panelling and imported furniture, The Abbey provides a faithful reproduction of a traditional Belgian Beer Café.
